abstract = {The 3D Tune-In Toolkit (3DTI Toolkit) is an open-source standard C++ library which includes a binaural spatialiser. This paper presents the technical details of this renderer, outlining its architecture and describing the processes implemented in each of its components. In order to put this description into context, the basic concepts behind binaural spatialisation are reviewed through a chronology of research milestones in the field in the last 40 years. The 3DTI Toolkit renders the anechoic signal path by convolving sound sources with Head Related Impulse Responses (HRIRs), obtained by interpolating those extracted from a set that can be loaded from any file in a standard audio format. Interaural time differences are managed separately, in order to be able to customise the rendering according the head size of the listener, and to reduce comb-filtering when interpolating between different HRIRs. In addition, geometrical and frequency-dependent corrections for simulating near-field sources are included. Reverberation is computed separately using a virtual loudspeakers Ambisonic approach and convolution with Binaural Room Impulse Responses (BRIRs). In all these processes, special care has been put in avoiding audible artefacts produced by changes in gains and audio filters due to the movements of sources and of the listener. The 3DTI Toolkit performance, as well as some other relevant metrics such as non-linear distortion, are assessed and presented, followed by a comparison between the features offered by the 3DTI Toolkit and those found in other currently available open- and closed-source binaural renderers.},

abstract = {We report the results of a study on the learnability of haptic icons used as alerts or notifications in smartphones. The aim was to explore the feasibility of using haptic icons to create assistive technologies for people with visual impairments. We compared the performance and satisfaction of users with different visual capacities (visually impaired vs. sighted) and using different learning processes (with or without a reinforcement learning stage). The reinforcement learning stage improves the recognition rate in both types of users, although the improvement obtained by the visually impaired users is even better as their recognition rates become very similar to those obtained by the sighted users. Finally, it was observed that the better recognized haptic icons are those assigned to the most employed applications by the user.},

abstract = {Inertial sensors offer the potential for integration into wireless virtual reality systems that allow the users to walk freely through virtual environments. However, owing to drift errors, inertial sensors cannot accurately estimate head and body orientations in the long run, and when walking indoors, this error cannot be corrected by magnetometers, due to the magnetic field distortion created by ferromagnetic materials present in buildings. This paper proposes a technique, called EHBD (Equalization of Head and Body Directions), to address this problem using two head- and shoulder-located magnetometers. Due to their proximity, their distortions are assumed to be similar and the magnetometer measurements are used to detect when the user is looking straight forward. Then, the system corrects the discrepancies between the estimated directions of the head and the shoulder, which are provided by gyroscopes and consequently are affected by drift errors. An experiment is conducted to evaluate the performance of this technique in two tasks (navigation and navigation plus exploration) and using two different locomotion techniques: (1) gaze-directed mode (GD) in which the walking direction is forced to be the same as the head direction, and (2) decoupled direction mode (DD) in which the walking direction can be different from the viewing direction. The obtained results show that both locomotion modes show similar matching of the target path during the navigation task, while DDrqs path matches the target path more closely than GD in the navigation plus exploration task. These results validate the EHBD technique especially when allowing different walking and viewing directions in the navigation plus exploration tasks, as expected. While the proposed method does not reach the accuracy of optical tracking (ideal case), it is an acceptable and satisfactory solution for users and is much more compact, portable and economical.},

The viewer includes a JavaScript API to interface with existing or new browser-based applications. abstract = {This work presents a mentoring program for first year engineering students in the Telecommunications Engineering College (ETSIT) at the University of Malaga (UMA). Actors involved in the program are professors from staff, veterans mentoring students and, of course, freshmen. All of them has been organized trough the Moodle based Virtual Learning Environment Platform of the UMA. The program has gone through several phases over three years. This paper shows the main objectives of this mentoring program, the initial design to get them where professors played mentor role, and successive changes made to try to improve the results, including the assumption of the mentor role by senior students (peer mentoring). The tools used for program evaluation are shown too. Despite the low participation, it has been a framework for the development of various educational and socializing activities (for mentors and mentees) focused on developing generic competences. Furthermore, it has been a research tool to get a better understanding of problems affecting students newly enrolled.},

abstract = {El impacto sobre los costes de la energía eléctrica así como los efectos negativos que produce sobre entornos como la astronomía, la salud y el medio ambiente, han provocado que las administraciones públicas estén regulando las instalaciones de alumbrado considerando la contaminación lumínica como un objetivo relevante a contrarrestar.
La actual normativa que regula los aspectos relativos a la contaminación lumínica establece unos valores máximos de luminancia, en particular en lo referente a las señales y anuncios luminosos. La determinación de los puntos de la escena donde se producen estos valores máximos queda sujeta a la observación subjetiva del técnico que realiza la medida. La sensibilidad del ojo humano al brillo no es lineal y resulta engañosa en tanto que su objeto es la identificación de la escena y no la medida de valores e intensidades. Por otra parte, la utilización del luminancímetro convencional implica la medición punto a punto sobre la escena. Ello obliga a la toma de numerosas mediciones con objeto de barrer la totalidad de la escena y determinar los puntos donde se alcanzan los máximos. Esta acción no sólo resulta tediosa y sujeta a errores, sino que implica la toma de medidas en distintos instantes sucesivos lo que afecta a errores de repetitividad y de variación en el tiempo en escenarios no estables.
En este trabajo se propone la utilización de cámaras fotográficas digitales para la evaluación de la luminosidad, en particular para señales y anuncios luminosos. En este sentido, una fotografía digital dispone de información de color y brillo de todos los puntos que la componen. Originariamente la información suministrada por la fotografía está orientada a la reproducción de la imagen por lo que contemplan algunas correcciones y compensaciones para adaptarla a la visión humana.},

abstract = {Virtual reality has become a promising field in recent decades, and its potential now seems clearer than ever. With the development of handheld devices and wireless technologies, interest in virtual reality is also increasing. Therefore, there is an accompanying interest in inertial sensors, which can provide such advantages as small size and low cost. Such sensors can also operate wirelessly and be used in an increasing number of interactive applications. An example related to virtual reality is the ability to move naturally through virtual environments. This is the objective of the real-walking navigation technique, for which a number of advantages have previously been reported in terms of presence, object searching, and collision, among other concerns. In this article, we address the use of foot-mounted inertial sensors to achieve real-walking navigation in a wireless virtual reality system. First, an overall description of the problem is presented. Then, specific difficulties are identified, and a corresponding technique is proposed to overcome each: tracking of foot movements; determination of the users position; percentage estimation of the gait cycle, including oscillating movements of the head; stabilization of the velocity of the point of view; and synchronization of head and body yaw angles. Finally, a preliminary evaluation of the system is conducted in which data and comments from participants were collected.},

abstract = {The design and implementation of different Project Based Learning (PBL) approaches are presented in this paper. All of them were carried out in the framework of the MSc degree in Electronic Systems for Smart Environments from the University of Malaga. Four subjects were developed using different values of the three main parameters of PBL: teamwork, self-guided learning and project complexity. During two academic years, several indicators were used to evaluate these experiences: compliance with subject time schedules, scores obtained for the students, interaction of each student in his team and satisfaction of students with the experiences. Our results encourage the use of PBL in bachelor degrees but, at the same time, confirm that PBL implementation is not a trivial task when projects are complex or when a high level of autonomous learning is required from students. Teamwork difficulties have also been found. So, we discuss the need of reaching a minimum level of proficiency in some key competencies before using PBL.},

abstract = {For some applications based on virtual reality technology, presence and task performance are important factors to validate the experience. Different approaches have been adopted to analyse the extent to which certain aspects of a computer-generated environment may enhance these factors, but mainly in 2D graphical user interfaces. This study explores the influence of different sensory modalities on performance and the sense of presence experienced within a 3D environment. In particular, we have evaluated visual, auditory and active haptic feedback for indicating selection of virtual objects. The effect of spatial alignment between proprioceptive and visual workspaces (co-location) has also been analysed. An experiment has been made to evaluate the influence of these factors in a controlled 3D environment based on a virtual version of the Simon game. The main conclusions obtained indicate that co-location must be considered in order to determine the sensory needs during interaction within a virtual environment. This study also provides further evidence that the haptic sensory modality influences presence to a higher extent, and that auditory cues can reduce selection times. Conclusions obtained provide initial guidelines that will help designers to set out better selection techniques for more complex environments, such as training simulators based on VR technology, by highlighting different optimal configurations of sensory feedback.},

abstract = {La enseñanza universitaria en el ámbito de la Ingeniería ha estado tradicionalmente orientada al trabajo individual del alumno, lo cual dificulta la adquisición de una de las aptitudes más valoradas en el mercado laboral, como es la competencia de trabajo en grupo. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo fomentar una componente de esta competencia, como es la interacción entre los estudiantes. Para ello se han diseñado y puesto en práctica una serie de actividades docentes en la asignatura ``Microcontroladores``, asignatura de 2º curso común a los estudios de Grado en Ingeniería de Sistemas Electrónicos, Sistemas de Telecomunicación, Telemática, Tecnologías de Telecomunicación, y Sonido e Imagen, en la Universidad de Málaga. Asimismo, se ha establecido un conjunto de indicadores que permiten evaluar el grado de consecución de la meta planteada. Los resultados han puesto de manifiesto que la interacción entre los estudiantes se puede fomentar mediante el conjunto de acciones planificadas, aunque las mismas requieren un esfuerzo adicional por parte del profesorado. Finalmente, se han propuesto algunas mejoras en el diseño del procedimiento, para mejorar su eficacia. Este trabajo se enmarca en el proyecto ACAI, cuyo objetivo es implementar un diseño curricular para el desarrollo de la competencia de Trabajo en Grupo. Así, se propone continuar la experiencia aquí presentada fomentando, para los mismos estudiantes, otras componentes de la competencia en asignaturas de 3º y 4º de los grados mencionados.},

abstract = {Mobile ad hoc networks are able to extend the coverage area of Internet access points by establishing multihop communication paths. Due to diverse factors such as the mobility of the nodes, the propagation conditions or the traffic status, the communication paths present a lifetime. In fact, the quality of the Internet connection mainly depends on the durability of the employed communication routes. In order to improve the network performance, the nodes should select the best route in terms of its remaining lifetime. Since the factors impacting the route lifetime are unpredictable, the route remaining lifetime cannot be analytically derived. Under these circumstances, a fuzzy-logic system outstands as a potential solution to estimate the stability of the routes. This paper analyses the potentiality of this kind of solution. In particular, the paper presents a fuzzy logic system which should be installed in the mobile nodes to distributedly identify the stable routes. In particular, the system is supported by an interval-based type-2 fuzzy logic. Being a type-2 fuzzy logic system, it is able to cope with inexact estimations. This ability is necessary to avoid the use of additional messages which will occupy the scarce wireless medium. On the other hand, an interval-based fuzzy system provides the simplicity demanded by the energy-constrained mobile devices. As a novelty, the two outputs of the interval-based fuzzy system are employed. The use of each output depends on the traffic state of the mobile node. By means of extensive simulations, we demonstrate the goodness of the proposed system. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.},

differences in cognitive variables of imagination or in anxiety.
By comparing the degree of participants' BCI control, a new quantitative
parameter for comparing performances and making decisions in signal
processing was found. The findings, the ongoing research process
to refine the control of a BCI, and the interaction of psychological
and computer procedures are discussed.},

abstract = {In order to extend the use of Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) to commercial applications, it is necessary to provide a mechanism to integrate this kind of networks into the Internet. In this way, MANETs could be utilized in visiting theme parks, commercial centers and military scenarios. The interconnection of MANETs and the Internet is supported by a Gateway. The gateway is responsible for informing about some configuration parameters as well as for enabling the creation of the routes to the Internet in the MANET nodes. For these tasks, several control messages are generated. The method in which these messages are originated defines the existing Integration Supports for MANETs. In particular, under the hybrid Global Connectivity support, the Gateway generates periodic Modified Router Advertisements (MRA) which are broadcast in an area close to the Gateway. The optimum values to define the periodicity of these messages and the diameter (number of hops) of the area in which they are propagated depend on the network conditions. Therefore, an automatic and dynamic algorithm is recommended to be implemented in the Gateway to adjust these two parameters. In this sense, this paper presents a technique by which the interval of emission of the MRA messages is controlled by a fuzzy system. The fuzzy system captures several network conditions such as the link stability or the number of sources. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms other adaptive approaches for the gateway discovery in MANETs.},
