abstract = {This contribution presents the 3D Tune-In (3DTI) Toolkit, an open source C++ library for binaural spatialisation which includes hearing loss and hearing aid emulators. Binaural spatialisation is performed through convolution with user-imported Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) and Binaural Room Impulse Responses (BRIRs), including additional functionalities such as near- and far-field source simulation, customisation of Interaural Time Differences (ITDs), and Ambisonic-based binaural reverberation. Hearing loss is simulated through gammatone filters and multiband expanders/compressors, including advanced non-linear features such as frequency smearing and temporal distortion. A generalised hearing aid simulator is also included, with functionalities such as dynamic equalisation, calibration from user-inputted audiograms, and directional processing.},

abstract = {Functions (HRTFs) can have an impact on localisation accuracy and, more in general, realism and sound sources externalisation. The impact of the HRTF choice on speech-in-noise performances in cocktail party scenarios has though not yet been investigated in depth. Within a binaurally-rendered virtual environment, Speech Reception Thresholds (SRTs) with frontal target speaker and lateral noise maskers were measured for 22 subjects several times across different sessions, and using different HRTFs. Results show that for the majority of the tested subjects, significant differences could be found between the SRTs measured using different HRTFs. Furthermore, the HRTFs leading to better or worse SRT performances were not the same across the subjects, indicating that the choice of the HRTF can indeed have an impact on speech-in-noise performances within the tested conditions.
These results suggest that when testing speech-in-noise performances within binaurally-rendered virtual environments, the choice of the HRTF should be carefully considered. Furthermore a recommendation should be made for future modelling of the speech-in-noise perception mechanisms to include monoaural spectral cues in addition to interaural differences.},

abstract = {The manufacturing industry needs to adapt their product-services to meet customer requirements in today’s rapidly changing markets. This paper presents how technologies can support knowledge sharing and collaboration during product-service processes. This work was part of the European Union Use-it-Wisely project and summaries demonstration results from the project. Six cluster cases from different industry sectors (energy, machinery, space, office workplace, vehicles, and shipbuilding) were developing their tools and processes during the project. Based on the demonstration evaluations, it seems that the Use-it-Wisely project has enabled companies to improve their product-services by using interactive collaborative environments and new business models. Partici‐pants that took part in the demonstrations felt that the new approach makes users’ work easier, provides competitive advantage, facilitates knowledge sharing and decision making, extends the efficient lifecycle of existing machinery and supports sustainable development.},

abstract = {This paper describes a group activity to develop entrepreneurial skills within an engineering degree. Transferable skills such as creativity, self-learning, peer review and use of groupware are also reinforced using cooperative work techniques. The students work in teams to develop business plans in the area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The plans are based on ideas fully conceived by the students. The activity ends with a com-petition where the students also act as jury. The role of the teacher is that of a consultant to which the teams resort during the development of their busi-ness plans. The teacher helps with scheduling intermediate milestones and deliverables, making sure that work is progressing for all the teams; gives feedback on the generated documents; and is eventually part of the jury. When available, we have invited an external evaluator from the local ICT in-dustry to the jury panel. The evaluation of the activity shows a high level of motivation in our students, who usually get involved beyond what is asked of them, despite the additional workload within an already tight semester.

abstract = {During the lifecycle of many industrial products, different services are applied over the different parts or sub-assemblies of the product geometry, from design and validation tests to maintenance operations. After a service is run, a decision-making process usually starts from the analysis of the service results. This paper presents a tool for analysis and decision-making based on service results linked to the geometry of complex products organized in a hierarchy of sub-assemblies. The tool is based in the use of separate models for the product, the services and the analysis of results, and the generation of different views of the models including a virtual representation of the product with overlapped service result information. The virtual representation of the product consists in a render of a 3D scan of the product where techniques to handle visual occlusion between parts are applied. An application case is presented for collaborative discussion of inspection results of a power plant steam turbine.},

abstract = {This paper presents an implementation based on the Virtual Reality Peripheral Network (VRPN 7.18) to handle connectivity between Virtual Reality (VR) applications and SensAble Technology Phantom Haptic Devices using the OpenHaptics 3.0 Haptic Library Application Programmable Interface (HLAPI). VRPN offers a client-server based architecture to support network transparent connectivity between VR applications and a set of physical interaction devices. VRPN suggests a set of classes to handle various physical devices types. Originally, the haptic rendering was supported by the obsolete GHOST API, provided by SensAble Technologies, within a specific VRPN class dedicated to Phantom devices. The proposed implementation consists of a) new classes that support haptic device server and VR applications connectivity, allow to specify arbitrary 3D object information to haptically render geometries and report applied force, angle at contact point, Surface Contact Point (SCP) and Depth of Penetration (DOP); and b) an upgrade of the Phantom dedicated VRPN class to handle haptic rendering using OpenHaptics HLAPI functionalities to manage device state and forces calculation. Moreover, the integration of the HLAPI implementation in VRPN remains respectful to VRPN inheritance and architecture standards: Tracker and Button classes remain unchanged. Copyright 2012 ACM.},

We can find technological limitations in devices and some human factors issues such as ergonomics aspects, among the major reasons to explain this fact. We think a change in this tendency can be expected in a near future thanks to the quick development of technology. That is why in this paper we present our current work in progress in which we recover some key findings from the state of the art to design and build an improved virtual reality system. To start, we focus on real walking systems. To be specific, we have developed and validated real walking prototypes with novel features such as the use of wireless devices (inertial sensors and head mounted display) and removing movement constraints due to absolute references like those in optical and magnetic tracking systems.},

abstract = {A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system that enables communication and control that is not based on muscular movements, but on brain activity. Some of these systems are based on discrimination of different mental tasks; usually they match the number of mental tasks to the number of control commands. In this paper, we will present a BCI system focused on the control of a virtual wheelchair. Our aim is to test different navigation paradigms to train subjects in a safe environment, prior to using it under real conditions. Due to the danger associated to a misclassification of the user's intention in a navigation system, the BCI system was developed using the optimum number of mental states regarding the classification accuracy, that is, only two. However, the system let the subjects choose among several navigation commands using only one active mental task (versus any other mental activity). Mapping one task into a higher number of commands was carried out with two different paradigms: i) the first one let the subjects move in a continuous way while they kept this task active, and ii) the subjects used the mental task to switch their state on /off: they stopped if they were moving (advances and turns) and vice versa. Sixteen healthy and untrained subjects, divided into two groups, participated in an experiment in which each group used one of the paradigms. Preliminary results show that both paradigms can be used to navigate through virtual environments, although with the first one the times needed to complete a path were notably lower.},
