abstract = {Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) have become popular for acoustic experiments, such as perceptual comparison of virtual and real sound sources, or Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF) measurement. However, wearing an HMD while listening to real sound sources modifies the sound waves that reaches the listener's ears. In this work, we study the effect of HMDs on individualized HRTFs. We have collected acoustic HRTF measurements, with and without the HMD, from 24 human participants and a manikin head, over 612 directions (including different azimuth and elevation angles). An objective evaluation indicates that, although there are frequency-dependent directional regions where the distortion caused by the HMD is higher, other regions are less affected by the HMD. A MUSHRA test with 15 subjects compares individualized HRTFs and a generic HRTF, measured with and without HMD. The perceptual evaluation reveals a significant effect of the HMD on the measured individualized HRTF, but it also shows that this effect is significantly smaller than the difference between individualized HRTFs and a generic HRTF, as indicated by the objective evaluation. This implies that, although distorted by the presence of the HMD, some of the individualized HRTF characteristics might be preserved when the HMD is worn.},

Hearing loss is simulated through gammatone filters and multiband expanders/compressors, including advanced non-linear features such as frequency smearing and temporal distortion. A generalised hearing aid simulator is also included, with functionalities such as dynamic equalisation, calibration from user-inputted audiograms, and directional processing.},

abstract = {Functions (HRTFs) can have an impact on localisation accuracy and, more in general, realism and sound sources externalisation. The impact of the HRTF choice on speech-in-noise performances in cocktail party scenarios has though not yet been investigated in depth. Within a binaurally-rendered virtual environment, Speech Reception Thresholds (SRTs) with frontal target speaker and lateral noise maskers were measured for 22 subjects several times across different sessions, and using different HRTFs. Results show that for the majority of the tested subjects, significant differences could be found between the SRTs measured using different HRTFs. Furthermore, the HRTFs leading to better or worse SRT performances were not the same across the subjects, indicating that the choice of the HRTF can indeed have an impact on speech-in-noise performances within the tested conditions.
These results suggest that when testing speech-in-noise performances within binaurally-rendered virtual environments, the choice of the HRTF should be carefully considered. Furthermore a recommendation should be made for future modelling of the speech-in-noise perception mechanisms to include monoaural spectral cues in addition to interaural differences.},

abstract = {The 3D Tune-In Toolkit (3DTI Toolkit) is an open-source standard C++ library which includes a binaural spatialiser. This paper presents the technical details of this renderer, outlining its architecture and describing the processes implemented in each of its components. In order to put this description into context, the basic concepts behind binaural spatialisation are reviewed through a chronology of research milestones in the field in the last 40 years. The 3DTI Toolkit renders the anechoic signal path by convolving sound sources with Head Related Impulse Responses (HRIRs), obtained by interpolating those extracted from a set that can be loaded from any file in a standard audio format. Interaural time differences are managed separately, in order to be able to customise the rendering according the head size of the listener, and to reduce comb-filtering when interpolating between different HRIRs. In addition, geometrical and frequency-dependent corrections for simulating near-field sources are included. Reverberation is computed separately using a virtual loudspeakers Ambisonic approach and convolution with Binaural Room Impulse Responses (BRIRs). In all these processes, special care has been put in avoiding audible artefacts produced by changes in gains and audio filters due to the movements of sources and of the listener. The 3DTI Toolkit performance, as well as some other relevant metrics such as non-linear distortion, are assessed and presented, followed by a comparison between the features offered by the 3DTI Toolkit and those found in other currently available open- and closed-source binaural renderers.},

The aim was to explore the feasibility of using haptic icons to create assistive technologies for people with visual impairments. We compared the performance and satisfaction of users with different visual capacities (visually impaired vs. sighted) and using different learning processes (with or without a reinforcement learning stage). The reinforcement learning stage improves the recognition rate in both types of users, although the improvement obtained by the visually impaired users is even better as their recognition rates become very similar to those obtained by the sighted users. Finally, it was observed that the better recognized haptic icons are those assigned to the most employed applications by the user.},

abstract = {Inertial sensors offer the potential for integration into wireless virtual reality systems that allow the users to walk freely through virtual environments. However, owing to drift errors, inertial sensors cannot accurately estimate head and body orientations in the long run, and when walking indoors, this error cannot be corrected by magnetometers, due to the magnetic field distortion created by ferromagnetic materials present in buildings. This paper proposes a technique, called EHBD (Equalization of Head and Body Directions), to address this problem using two head- and shoulder-located magnetometers. Due to their proximity, their distortions are assumed to be similar and the magnetometer measurements are used to detect when the user is looking straight forward. Then, the system corrects the discrepancies between the estimated directions of the head and the shoulder, which are provided by gyroscopes and consequently are affected by drift errors. An experiment is conducted to evaluate the performance of this technique in two tasks (navigation and navigation plus exploration) and using two different locomotion techniques: (1) gaze-directed mode (GD) in which the walking direction is forced to be the same as the head direction, and (2) decoupled direction mode (DD) in which the walking direction can be different from the viewing direction. The obtained results show that both locomotion modes show similar matching of the target path during the navigation task, while DDrqs path matches the target path more closely than GD in the navigation plus exploration task. These results validate the EHBD technique especially when allowing different walking and viewing directions in the navigation plus exploration tasks, as expected. While the proposed method does not reach the accuracy of optical tracking (ideal case), it is an acceptable and satisfactory solution for users and is much more compact, portable and economical.},

We extend state-of-the art interaction techniques and introduce a novel navigation metaphor to navigate around complex products using constrained trajectories. To address the challenge of discovering and accessing the parts of the complex object, which are not visible, a set of occlusion management techniques have been implemented. abstract = {The 3D Tune-In (3DTI) project (http://www.3d-tune-in.eu) aims at using 3D sound, visuals and games to support people using hearing aid devices and educate others about hearing loss. Within the project the 3DTI Toolkit, a standard C++ library for audio spatialisation and simulation using speakers or headphones, has been developed. The toolkit allows development of highly realistic and immersive 3D audio simulations (both loudspeaker- and headphones-based), and simulation (within the virtual environment) of hearing aid devices and of different typologies of hearing loss. The 3DTI Toolkit can be, and has been, used to develop applications and games relating to hearing aid and hearing loss.},

abstract = {The manufacturing industry needs to adapt their product-services to meet customer requirements in todayrqs rapidly changing markets. This paper presents how technologies can support knowledge sharing and collaboration during product-service processes. This work was part of the European Union Use-it-Wisely project and summaries demonstration results from the project. Six cluster cases from different industry sectors (energy, machinery, space, office workplace, vehicles, and shipbuilding) were developing their tools and processes during the project. Based on the demonstration evaluations, it seems that the Use-it-Wisely project has enabled companies to improve their product-services by using interactive collaborative environments and new business models. Particiâpants that took part in the demonstrations felt that the new approach makes usersrq work easier, provides competitive advantage, facilitates knowledge sharing and decision making, extends the efficient lifecycle of existing machinery and supports sustainable development.},

Issues of collaboration, gaps in supporting the entire lifecycle and the advantages of defining (and sharing) semantics are discussed. The benefits achieved through the use of models to maintain control of system consistency are described, along with examples of the requirements for using this approach in practice and the potential impacts on company workflow. The maturity and expected advantages of known solutions and proposed extensions to current practices are also described.},

abstract = {This chapter presents an industrial case study that investigates a collaborative tool for use in the fossil and nuclear power plant industries. The tool makes the results of technical inspections on fossil and nuclear power plants available to all stakeholders and assists in the post-inspection decision-making process by highlighting decisions that minimise the outage duration and prolong the turbinerqs service life. Before development commenced, an actor-product-service (APS) model was employed to establish the problem, the process of which is presented in this chapter. This model describes the relationships between the elements that the system must store and manage. In this particular industrial case, the APS model defines the product as the power plant turbine and the service as technical inspections. Henceforth, this model describes the relation between the inspection tasks and results and the turbine parts that are inspected. In addition, the APS model allows the application to work jointly with the product and the service, representing the information in a way closer to the mental model of each user profile, which should result in an improvement in productivity.},

abstract = {Industries involved in manufacturing and providing services for high-value, long-life products must address challenges related to upgrading their products once they are in operation. The aim of this chapter is to present some of those challenges, which have been addressed in the Use-it-Wisely (UIW) project using the tools and methods presented in this book. To outline these different challenges and how they are interrelated, an imaginary company is assumed, a European manufacturer producing high-investment equipment for customers worldwide. Their products are complex machinery with a long life cycle, and thus, an important part of the business is focused not only on manufacturing but also on inspection, maintenance, refurbishing, upgrading, and retirement. This chapter presents a brief description of its activities and business areas to highlight the main challenges that this company has to address in the current context of globalization, rapid change and high restrictions, together with other companies and stakeholders that define a value network. Finally, the chapter outlines how these challenges have been organized to discover key elements for addressing them. This organization is a result of the UIW-project.},

abstract = {Developing generic competences in bachelor degrees is not an easy task. In order to get a successful result, all actors in the teaching-learning process must agree in several topics, as the definition of each competence or the best approach for learning and evaluation. For this reason, the point of view of the students should be considered. This paper presents this point of view of students from several Engineering Degrees about how some generic competences should be trained and how this is currently addressed. Besides, self-perception of proficiency level in these generic competences has been assessed. We have used a survey methodology and the obtained results allow us to narrow down the focus on the role of the degree in training competences and the need of assess student skills before changing the curriculum. In a future work, these results will be contrasted with teachersrq point of view in the framework of an overall research that is also briefly described.},

abstract = {This work presents a mentoring program for first year engineering students in the Telecommunications Engineering College (ETSIT) at the University of Malaga (UMA). Actors involved in the program are professors from staff, veterans mentoring students and, of course, freshmen. All of them has been organized trough the Moodle based Virtual Learning Environment Platform of the UMA. The program has gone through several phases over three years. This paper shows the main objectives of this mentoring program, the initial design to get them where professors played mentor role, and successive changes made to try to improve the results, including the assumption of the mentor role by senior students (peer mentoring). The tools used for program evaluation are shown too. Despite the low participation, it has been a framework for the development of various educational and socializing activities (for mentors and mentees) focused on developing generic competences. Furthermore, it has been a research tool to get a better understanding of problems affecting students newly enrolled.},
